The Costa del Sol in southern Spain is a captivating coastal paradise known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage. We love the climate - over 300 days of sunshine annually mean it offers endless opportunities for sunbathing and water sports, yet just a 30 minute drive inland from the coast you will find charming mountain villages, where you can savor delicious local cuisine and stroll through picturesque streets.
The region's blend of natural beauty, modern amenities and vibrant cities makes it a perfect destination whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, a city break, or just a taste of authentic Spanish culture.
Nestled east of Malaga along the Costa del Sol, the Axarquía region is a hidden gem for visitors seeking an authentic Spanish experience. This picturesque area is characterized by rolling hills covered in vineyards, olive groves, and fruit orchards, creating a stunning backdrop for exploration.
The Axarquía boasts charming white-washed villages. Some, like Frigiliana and Cómpeta are quite well known, others, just a few minutes further from the coast, like Salares and Sedella, are an unexpected delight, where time seems to stand still amidst narrow, winding streets adorned with colorful flowers.
Its Mediterranean coastline offers pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. Beyond its natural beauty, the Axarquía is renowned for its sweet wine, tropical fruits like mangos and avocados, and a thriving local gastronomy scene.
The region exudes an enchanting blend of culture, history, and natural splendor which draws back those who discover it's magic time and time again.
For us Sedella has the perfect blend of breathtaking mountain backdrop and traditional Spanish architecture. Nestled at the foot of Mount Maroma, narrow streets of white painted houses filled with pots of colourful flowers tumble down the hillside above the MA126, glimpses of the coast occasionally appearing between the balconies. This is authentic, traditional Andalucia, where you will still see the local goatherd leading his herd through the village, the baker's van visits daily, and the locals have a warm welcome for everyone.
By now, we have got to know the region well and there are places we go back to regularly. We would like to give you some tips for when you stay at Las Cinco Palmeras.
Nestled in the mountains around a 20 minute drive from Sedella, Cómpeta offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and is known for its white-washed houses and traditional charm.
It has a good selection of independent shops, a small market every Saturday morning where you can buy local produce and handicrafts, and a great selection of restaurants and bars to try.
Around a 35 minute drive, Torre Del Mar is our nearest beach resort. With wide stretches of sand and a long paseo maritimo dotted with chiringuitos its a great place to spend the afternoon and evening and has a huge choice of bars and restaurants to choose from.
Popular with locals and tourists alike it still retains the feel of an authentic Spanish beach resort.
A scenic drive from Sedella through Competa in the direction of Frigliana will take you to the "lost village" of El Acebuchal.
The village lay empty and abandoned for over 50 years after it's inhabitants were expelled during the Spanish civil war. Since 1998 it's been lovingly restored by relatives and descendents of former residents. Head there in time for a stroll around the village and a long lunch at the excellent El Acebuchal bar/restaurant, and then drive on to Frigliana for pre-dinner drinks and great sunset views to the coast.
